There were plenty of lawsuits over "sudden acceleration" in the days before computerized engines. It was almost always due to the driver pressing the accelerator rather than the brake, freaking out, and pressing the "brake" even harder. Usually the driver is senile and shouldn't even be driving. Proving it either way in court is difficult but juries often give the decision to grandpa versus the big car company because they figure the big car company can afford it.
I'm sure some of these Toyota cases have nothing to do with the computer or the floor mat, but are just a result of drivers panicking. Probably one dangerous side effect of all the electronic safety stuff on new cars is that drivers can take it all for granted and pay very little attention to actually operating the vehicle.
