I was shocked to see how little heat it took to start the reaction. I agree with David that it is most likely the tire burning in an oxygen rich environment, but that does not make it any less scary.

Watching the video and hearing the presenter say that heating lug nuts could do that as well made me think back to all the times I have heated old lug nuts so I could get the rim off the truck. Next time I will think long and hard before I apply any heat, and if the tire is junk I will slit it first in a few places with a sawzall!

Otherwise maybe wire brushing the threads, PB Blaster, and time is the best route.
