Even though we all like our "split rims" (I know they're technically not split rims, but that's what everybody calls them), there is one real disadvantage of them and that's that if you get a flat on a trip, you might not find a tire shop nearby that will work on them, whereas every town of any size has a tire shop that will do drop-center rims. Also, even if you find one that works on them, they charge more. Les Schwab will usually fix light truck tires for free, but they charge $25 for split rims, and of course half the time you need a new tube too.
