Steal them back from the impound lot. Take your blue wrench, a steak for the junkyard dog, and a couple pictures of Ben for any neighbors who try to get nosy. Tell the cops some guy that "was tasked with getting rid of them" sold them to you. That should make it all just fine, as near as I can tell.

Second, talk to a good lawyer. Any decent lawyer will give you a half hour for free. The parties involved here have real money that can be gotten in a judgment. It's not like you're up against some ordinary gang-banger car thief. You want a feisty little criminal lawyer here who knows how the local system works, not some pudgy "wills and probate" or "corporate contracts" guy. If he says, "You're f**ked -- the police chief's brother's the scrapper and his wife's the code compliance officer, and she's sleeping with the judge", then you have your answer, but it's worth half an hour to find out.

I know how you feel about giving up, but at this point, it's not just for you. It's for all of us who collect old rigs and buy them on a handshake and a bill of sale.

One last thought. This is probably not the first time these worthless blobs of meat have pulled this. They probably have some connections that let them get away with it. I'm sorry it fell upon you to save the world from evildoers, but it kind of looks like it did. Maybe some news reporter would be interested. These days, newspapers aren't what they used to be, and most anyone can be a "free lance reporter" and get published. Surely there is someone in some local paper who would love to make a name for themselves.

Lastly, there's the Sicilian motto: "Revenge is a dish best served cold."
