I agree, but you have to have it in you to go to the extra effort. Generally, each level up you go in the cop world, the more professional they are.

I agree about the police just making things difficult sometimes. One Friday night some kids tried to steal my Honda car from out front of my house in Everett while I was in Idaho. All they managed to do was push it out into the street about 10 feet. My good old German neighbor, Manfred, called the police, who came out and called a wrecker. Manfred went out and told them where the car belonged and to just push or tow it back where it had been. But NO, their "policy" was that once the police were called, it had to be impounded. What a racket!

NOBODY from the city or the wrecking company ever called me to tell me my car was impounded. Manfred called me, so I called the city police, where the lady told me she couldn't tell me anything about anything unless I came in in person and filled out paperwork to get the police report. Basically, the idea was that the car would sit in the impound yard as long as possible until I happened to come back to town, noticed it was missing, filled out the paperwork at the cop shop, and then bailed my car out of jail, all because someone ELSE had tried to steal it. Thanks to Manfred, I at least knew the car was impounded, so drove back to Everett, but of course I couldn't get the car out until Monday, so of course they charged me towing plus 4 days of storage, all because I was the VICTIM of a crime and because "policy" prevented the cop$ from doing the reasonable thing and just pushing the car back where it came from.

Oh, they did tell me that since I was the victim, I could go to the city council and beg them to waive the impound fees. Like in a city of 100,000 people, the city council is going to give a rat's rear about me and my impound fees. As it is, they only take public comments at the end of the council meeting, after the decisions have all been made and the reporters have gone home. Do you think they could maybe have a general POLICY that if you're the VICTIM of auto theft and they impound your vehicle, you don't have to pay to get it back? Of course not. It's the car's legal owner who has the money, not the thief, and as far as the city's concerned, revenue is all that matters.

Chris' situation is 1000 times worse, but the part about the cops doing nothing but making matters worse kind of struck a nerve.
