Front tires wore out first, as often happens. At that point, rears were 50% so he kept them and just bought two new ones for the front. That'd be my guess. I know I never throw out any tire that has legal tread left on it, even if that means I have 3 different brands and two different sizes on the same vehicle (I've done that).
