The easy way we always figured HP needed for SINGLE cylinder with good cycle time was 1 HP per Gallon per minute on the pump for two stage pumps. Single stage pumps we went with 2HP per every gallon per minute.

I'd hope your big block would have enough power ;)

Typical GPM on a 4 inch would at least 16 GPM. In your case with boom I'd think it wouldn't need to move as much as most applications such as a backhoe with mutiple cylinders going at once. Most Bigger Ag tractors run at least a 32 GPM pump anymore.
