The only way that could happen on this truck is if the tank was getting pressurized to the same pressure as the filter. The return line from the hydraulic system goes through the filter and thence into the tank. Another line out of the tank goes to the intake (low pressure) side of the pump. Thus, if the pump was pushing fluid backwards it would be pressurizing the tank. The tank has a vent cap which presumably is working since the tank would surely have bulged out if there was pressure anywhere near 350 psi (the rating of the filter) building up in it. The tank is about 24" x 32" x 7", so its large sides would be very weak to resist any significant pressure at all. That's why I'm thinking there had to be a clog between the filter and the tank.
