sounds like it got work hardened. high carbon content would make it more brittle, especially if the weld held and ripped off what it was welded to. also, if you run too hot you can weaken the underlying structure of what you are welding to. make sure you get the area as clean as possible next time as well. are you running a MIG? you might try running a different gas such as Argon, it generally helps with that. CO2 can make good welds depending on what you're doing but on something like that you may end up making a brittle weld, or affecting the underlying structure. my 2 cents
