It looks like you need the shifter handle too, like most everyone does. The small bolts break off at the gear case, and I guess the old timers just threw the handle away, banged or pried the clutch into the drum, and figured they could control it well enough from the PTO.

Don't be intimidated about tearing it apart. It'll be a good practice project for when you have to do a transmission or an engine. Unlike those components, the winch has fewer pieces, tolerances are not critical, and more wear is acceptable. Have you removed the drain plug to see what came out, and removed the fill plug to look down inside it? I did that when I first got my truck and knew that the winch was shot. I drained about a cup of water and bronze dust out of the drain plug, without a hint of oil in it, and I could see through the fill hole that the gear teeth were worn down to a feather edge. The truck had been used with an A-frame on it for setting up circus tents at the state fairgrounds, and was "rode hard and put away wet" for many years. If yours still has oil in it, even just enough to prevent rust, it may be in better condition than you think.
