Jon, I have been in the welding buss. for 37 years now and the auto hood is an relitively new thing for me.
I use both type of hoods and have a love hate relatonship with both of them.
There has never been a problem with arc flash useing the auto hood,but depending on what you are doing it is hard to justify spending the $$. They are great for TIG because you can get in position and just hit the pedal and start the weld. Also for body sheet metal that has to be stitched welded. My biggest complaint on the auto hood is I have to wear glasses under it so I can see and that makes for more lenses to keep clean where on the small window I can use the diopler window. They may be available for the auto hood too, haven't looked.
