check out a copy of Automotive Mechanics by
William H. Crouse 3rd ed if you can find
it or get one online from ebay
has detailed diagnostic proceedures for
determining engine problems from noises
before you tear anything down check it out
correctly "by the book"
Automotive Mechanics is a McGraw-Hill Text book and the early editions cover early engines in detail
