Robert, before you get too involved, take a few minutes and find the cylinder. with the engine at idle pull one plug wire at a time, when you get to the cyl that is making the noise it will quit making any sound or will change enough to tell you what you need to know. if it don't make any noise at idle rev slowly to check. what you describe sounds like a cracked piston to me, someone else chime in please. been there done that.
