I know that the Garwood winches are often used on dozers and other earth moving equipment. Maybe they have the clutch shifter surrounded with oil in a closed housing to keep it clean and not all gummed up with dirt. Some Ransey winches have a closed housing like that, but they have zerk fitting instead of an oil plug.
Not a bad idea.
