Copied this post from the 39-47 Dodge Truck Forum:

Synthetic oil will cause leaks in any engine that has been in use for a good many miles or years. It just has a way of getting past seals and gaskets that are aged. It does work excellent on fresh engines after they have been run in on regular modern oil to seat the rings in. The synthetic is just to slippery to allow the rings to get a grip on the cylinder walls and seat in.

As for oil weight, any engine that is dependent on thick oil for compression is worn out. Oil that is marked as 10-30 is of the consistency of 10 @ very cold temps and 30 on hot days. Most engines back then always recommended 20w in summer and 10 in winter. For some reason Chrysler recommended 30 possibly due to the fact that these are trucks and exposed to harder working conditions.

What ever you use, please add a small bottle of ZDDP, a zinc additive with each oil change as the new oils have no zinc which is needed in every flat tappet engine. I just finished the complete rebuild of a 29 Buick Master6 which uses a roller cam.... funny how they got away from that and now all have come back to it for long life and better cam profiles!
