If you are going off road the oil bath will dump oil in the intake and smoke quite a bit usually at the worst possible time, ie halfway up a hill climb when you need all the power. However I believe the oil bath was speced on engines for dusty environments long after cars went to paper elements and are possibly still used today. so my guess is the oil bath does a good job dealing with heavy dust probably without increasing the flow restriction. They are also easy to feild service.
