bead blasting is safe enough to use on fiberglass, can be adjusted fine enough to take off paint but leave the gel-coat. Blame the blaster operator, they can cut metal like a torch with a blaster, really tear stuff up or they can be gentle as a colt. Real sorry to hear about your loss.
