The 5.83 gears are OK for an M37 that is occassionally used and runs at 55 mph.

If you use your M37 often, especially as a daily driver, or have any thoughts about doing 60+ mph, then get the 4.89 gears. If for no other reason than to slow down the transfer case whine and heat.

I also want my M37 to be an absolute no-compromise rig for the boonies. I intend to take it into some very primative country. So I don't want to part with the 5.83 gears. This will limit me to 55 mph, as I don't want to push the transfer case above that.

An alternative is to go to larger tires, like the 1100x16 or maybe the Gama Goats. You'll have to decide for yourself if the tradeoff of effectively changing the gear ratio is outweighed by the increased ground contact footprint.

If you like to put your M37 into the garage, be advised that with stock tires and no cargo canvas and hardware, an M37 barely clears a typical garage door opening. If you put taller tires on, it will not clear unless you remove the canvas top and its hardware (or hardtop). This might be an issue for some of you.
