No gears involved in 'direct'. It is accomplished by sliding the 4/5 synchro forward and locking input shaft to output shaft. So nothing to swap. And countershaft/cluster gears are usually one piece, so gears can't be swapped at all.

He would have had to swap guts from another box, maybe to use the DD double pto box with the OD gears.
