Your idea to use heavy rubber is a good one. I went to my local trailer dealer who carries the heavy rubber mat that they use in horse trailers to stop the horses from falling. It comes in two thicknesses. I bought 1 piece if the thinner stuff and used my PW floor mat pattern to cut one for my carryall. That mat killed a tremendous amount of noise. I also put it over the tranny hump which took time to get to to fit to the curves. I used automotive upolstry screw to hold it to the tranny hump and it just lays on the floor. It was not too expensive to do.
