Years ago I was a willing parcipatant in the hodrod movment, at the time most ignigtion systems were points type and didn't make much power(slightly hotter than our pws) as improvements in the systems took place it took increasing more insulation on the wire to contain the current. as headers came on the scene it was hard sometimes to keep the wires off of the hotpipes. on a 6mm w/ not much protection just a small touch on a header w/ a non heat resistant coating and you have a miss. over the years the insulation has went 6mm,7mm,8mm, and on some apps. more. the wire has changed from copper to grapite, the insulation has went to way,way better types of materials(rubber to silicone)for heat resistance, and more of it for containment of the energy. in my case I run 7mm grapite from a ford v-6 in /six tubes to waterproof my system. if mosisture wasn't a factor in my case I would still have the 6mm stock type wires on the truck as nothing else is needed unless there is another circumstance driving the situation, are you going to put a stronger coil on? are you are going to upgrade to electronic? any of these will require better wires than the stock wires. a late model hi-po coil will light up your engine bay like a light show at night, in conjuntion w/ stock wires. I hope this exsplains some of what has happened to car energy systems in the past 45 yrs or so. Dave.
