Unfortunately, "outlive us both" is a target that's getting easier to meet all the time. How's things with you? I think the last I saw you I'd just run into that "lady" who turned in front of me in Leavenworth. Still haven't seen a dime from her, but if her promises were worth a dollar apiece I'd have a new car by now. I think you were heading off to your son's for dinner or something when I came by.

I'm thinking to try the "ring job" on my beater M37. It had no air cleaner or oil filter when I got it, with predictable results. I've done half-assed overhauls on smaller engines with good results -- just replace what's worn and nothing else. I've always used the cylinder reamer before pulling the pistons so the rings don't hang up on the ridge. Knurling the pistons might be the point at which I decide it needs a bigger overhaul, though. I don't hear any piston slap or rod knock -- just backfiring under compression (worn valves?), a fair bit of blow-by, and unimpressive oil pressure (25 lbs). It'd be interesting to just see what new rings, rod bearings, and a bit of in-frame valve grinding would do for it. That assumes I can remove the oil pan with the engine in the truck, which I don't know about. I don't know if it's possible to change both halves of the main bearings with the crank in place on that engine. Might be able to tap the old ones out but not get the new ones in.

You got any snow over there in Wenatchee yet? We sure don't. All the snow's heading east this year. I hope things are good with you, and Gail's well.
