The Ripping chain is for going with the grain. Guys who use their saw for a saw mill use that. You don't want that.

Square ground chisel would be harder to file so I wouldn't recommend it. It dulls quicker when dirt comes into play so stay away from it as well.

Other variances deal with anti kickback chain or not, normally called safety chain.

In the Stihl chain the "Green" chain is less agressive. I run that on my smaller saw but I Really like the RSC "Yellow" chain which is a semi chisel on my 660. Just lay that saw on a log and bury your feet in sawdust.

My recommendation would vary on your experience with sawing. Probably be best to get a couple different chains to see what best suits your needs. It really depends on your needs and experience. Kevin
