What I did when running my OE tank was to drill the sender 'cap' for 5/16", bend a new piece of tube, and solder it into the hole. There is room, just barely. Drill the hole, then angle the drill, using it as a rotary file, to about 45°. You want the bend centered in the hole.

I think I own a bender gismo, somewhere. I have good luck bending it around something like a big piece of pipe, 4-5" diameter is good, pull on both ends close to the 'mandrel' as you bend. Bend the bottom end 90° away from the sender. I think a 40" length is ample. You can adjust the bend until the sock barely hits the bottom, feel for it as you trial install. Socks are just a snug fit over the tube. You will need to bow the float wire to get it in through the hole, no problem.

If the sock plugs up in use, you can remove the gas cap and blow air in the lines. This will either clear the blockage or blow the sock clean off the tube.

Socks are on eBay, <"fuel tank" sock> or from fuel tanks.com?

Keep in mind that a new sender is $175 from VPW...

You could have done this without cutting into your tank, just plug the old pick-up.
