The operating rod doesn't rub on anything on any of them. If the "operating rod tube" is the gas cylinder under the front of the barrel, it doesn't look curved on any of mine. Chris says it's supposed to be curved, so maybe we're thinking of different parts. Thanks to copey for the reminder about not leaving it with the bolt open (and the spring compressed). I do think the spring being changed out is a clue. Somebody was trying to fix something, unless it just happened that they lost the original spring and rummaged around the shop and found some spring laying around that appeared to fit.
Can you borrow somebody's good Garand and compare them point-by point? That might be the easiest way to figure out what's wrong.
