An'nt gonna happen with your old 39 by sticking a Cummins 6 in it. Its like trying to strap a rocket on a bi-plane and fly to the moon. You'd be better off finding a wrecked Ram and putting an old cab on its chassis. Or find a bigger rolling truck frame and start there. Going over 45mph in one of these old 1.5 tons is probably a death wish for you or someone else. The stiffness of the suspension. The non power steering, bias ply tires and the old Budd rims all do a fine job for their designed use. Try to push them more and its a disaster waiting to happen. The cab is cramped at best. Your body position in it while driving is not comfortable. Reaction to things at a higher speed may be difficult or slower. Moving legs for pedals or trying to steer. These old doors can pop open anytime due to their latch design. The brakes on these old 1.5 tons are just fine for their designed speeds and loaded but I would bet they would fade away in a hurry at higher speeds.

I also wonder how well the bearings and so forth would even hold up in the higher speeds. The rear end will take the power of the Cummins but I wonder what turning it at higher speeds would do to it overall. Vibrations and so forth. I'd like to hear what Dan Shockley would think about this part of it?

I wish you were close to Kansas I would give you a ride in a 1.5 ton and you would understand.
