Like those long nuts were threaded a slightly different pitch? making them self-locking? making them distort the threads on the u-bolt? Because otherwise it makes no more sense than not re-using any other fastener.

But then, like Clint alluded to, the aftermarket u-bolts are soft, the OE ones are like grade five? My neighbor with his built up, jacked up Blazer has some gold plated ones the seem soft as Home Depot all-thread crap. I think I trust my 50 year old ones more. But I'll probably have to cut them off, everything on this truck is rusted together. That is what's keeping me from adding caster shims.
