Paul, I don't understand how the deep nuts distort the u-bolt threads on tightening.

When properly torqued the bolt is stretched like all bolts stretch when properly torqued. When the nut is loosened, the bolt returns to its original (or near original) length. If the nut was overtorqued I suppose it will ruin the bolt by stretching it past the point where it can return. Just trying to understand this way of thinking. Does it apply only to spring u-bolts? Does it apply to wheel studs, head bolts, u-joint retaining caps?

Is there different properties to the metal of the spring u-bolts that don't allow them to ever be useful again?
