He'd had his manual tranny overhauled. The invoice had a listing for "Needle bearing, qty ONE." Seems the mechanic dropped one needle bearing into the tranny, couldn't retrieve it.
It floated into the gears at freeway speed, locking the tranny, breaking the front u-joint. Dunno about pole vaulting in a vertical plane, but throwing the car sideways into the ditch and a rollover nearly done him in.
