I'm not sure I believe that it's a wear issue. Nothing is really turning so there should be almost no wear when the hubs are disengaged.

However, the problem I've heard of is that since they are not being used the gear lube will settle out in the pumpkin. This can allow corrosion to form as well as everything running "dry" for a little while when the axles are engaged.

My old Dodge Dakota had a sticker on the driver's sun visor that advised you to engage 4WD (auto locking hubs) at least monthly in order to keep the front axle lubricated.
