So, now that it's winter, I finally got back to re-assembling the sno-cat with the broken axle shaft. I figured no problem, I have the two good shaft I retrieved from my bone-yard over the summer, I have all the bearings and seals on hand, everything's cleaned up and ready to go, just press the bearing on the shaft, put the hub on it, put her back together and wait until the snow gets deep. The seating surface for the seal on the new old shaft is a bit rough, so I thought I'd slip it into the housing and see where the new seal actually rides on it, since often a replacement seal rides at a different spot on the shaft and you can get by without sleeving it. The shaft absolutely would not go into the differential mechanism. After much wiggling and futzing, I finally took and compared it to the old one.

They're the same length, every part is the same diameter, the taper for the hub is the same, the keyway and the threads for the hub nut are the same, BUT THEY HAVE DIFFERENT SPINES!!

The old (broken) one has 10 spline grooves and my replacement one, which also came out of a Tucker axle assembly, has 16 spline grooves!

Anybody here have any idea what's going on with this? This is the 1/2 ton "corporate" axle used on light trucks and some cars in the 1950s. Any idea how to ask for the right thing when I start trying to track one down? I tried a lot last year and didn't have much luck even when I didn't know there was a 10-spline and 16-spline version. Better yet, anyone have one sitting in their bone yard?
