As alluded to, it is purely marketing. The 2500/3500's are all marketed as "Heavy Duty" just as Ford calls their F250/350, etc. "Super Duty" and GM uses "HD" on 2500 and up. My '08 2500 says "Heavy Duty" under the 2500 emblem on the front fender, not on the tail gate. The other difference with the 2500 vs. the 3500 single rear wheel is the ring and pinion size. The 2500 has a 10.5" while both the dual and single wheel 3500's have the 11.5" ring gear. Surprisingly, the size of the disc brake rotors on the 2500 and 3500 single wheel are the same, but the dual wheel has slightly larger rotors.
