If your starter is old and worn it could be requiring too many amps to get it to turn up to speed.
When making your short yard trips are you reving the engine up to get the alternator to kick in and provide output? Just having your truck running near idle does not mean you are charging your battery. You should be able to see this on your amp meter if you have one.
