Here is a photo with the cap removed. It appears to be a round tube that has kind of been bent into a square shape from the spot welding process and inserting a fuel nozzle for 60 years. Some may have had a channel shaped sheetmetal reinforcement that held the vent in position during welding?
I do not have a filler off of a truck but the vent protrudes out the tank end of the filler neck and has a dog-leg bend in it similar to what you have. If memory serves, it protrudes about 4-inches, just enough for it to enter into the tank. Maybe a little less than what you made.
