The brake drum is disconnected when the T-case is in neutral. I've never had an M37 T-case apart, but I was hoping that since the brake drum is in line with the input shaft, it was a single shaft straight through, and the gears that drive the front and rear output shafts each got meshed with the input shaft separately. I guess if it was that simple to use use the T-case brake drum as a PTO output, other people would have been doing it. On the M35, there are three shaft. The input shaft goes straight through, and then there's an intermediate shaft that drives the brake drum and the rear axle, and a lower shaft that drives the front axle.

I also see there's no place for a PTO on the T-case, but there's a spot for one on each side of the tranny. I'm thinking maybe my telephone truck utilizes both slots. Anyway, I guess if I want to do anything fancy I'll need a separate PTO for the other side of the tranny. That's a project that can wait a long time.
