What's sad is the garbage. It's one thing if some guy is sitting hi trailer watching TV and throwing the empties out the window, but when people go to the trouble of putting the trash in bags and hauling it someplace to dump it, why can't they haul it to the dump? Or if they don't want to pay the fairly insane fees that the transfer stations charge these days, why can't they drive around town at night, and find some business with a big dumpster out back to throw it in? I know that method's not very cool, but it's still cooler than just dumping it outdoors somewhere.

I recently saw about a dozen bags of leaves dumped by the side of the road just outside of Wallace. That was stupid in several ways. First of all, the city provides a free dumpsters every fall for people to put their leaves in. Second, if you rake them out into neat piles in the street, the city crew will pick them up. Third, if they'd just hauled the leaves up the road in the back of their truck, without bags, and dumped them off the side of the road, they wouldn't even be trash. But instead, there's now a pile of ratty plastic bags by the side of the road.

I just don't understand why, when it's just as easy to do it the right way, people do it the wrong way. In the old days, a trash pile wasn't nearly so bad. The rats and bears ate the food, most of the rest rotted, the iron rusted and didn't look too bad, and the bottles turned purple and became collectibles, or at least provided some entertainment as "reactive targets". Now, it's all plastic, styrofoam, electronic junk, synthetic clothing that doesn't rot, and so in.

Sorry for the rant, but in addition to the garbage bags full of leaves, I recently ran across yet another beautiful spot out in the boonies with yet another shot up TV, busted couch, and shot up plates, and shotgun shells all over it. Come on, people! What's the matter? Didn't your mother ever teach you to clean up your room?
