I don't like it much, but it was only $40, compared to $350 for the bronze one. Maybe this is stupid, but if somebody is making and selling them, then they must be okay, right? It will definitely be an occasional use thing -- probably emergency use only, and I'll keep it well lubed. I have bigger trucks and bigger winches for heavier work.

At this point, I'm still trying to get the winch out. The guy welded a lot of things that should not have been welded, and he welded them very well. After torching off some rusted-solid 3/4" bolts, and cutting out some pieces of the 3/4" deck plate, I'm now at the point where I need to get the drive shaft off, but of course it's all buggered up too.

This is the truck where they ran the PTO back to a 2-speed, 2-output gearbox under the bed, and then ran one of the outputs from it up to the front winch. The other one has a sprocket on it, no doubt to drive something that's no longer there. The long winch drive shaft has some pretty sharp angles, and the part you would think would be splined to slide is all rusted together and instead of being splined it just has one slot and a key in it. The U-joints are some kind that doesn't come apart, and they appear to be swaged onto the shafts. Maybe it's some agricultural setup. I'm about to just cut the drive shaft and deal with it later. It can't be that hard to get the modern equivalent of this from an implement dealer.
