I think once you try MIG for sheet metal, you will not want to fool around with anything else. Your time and the frustration factor is worth something too when looking at alternatives.
Speaking of cost, I found an ESAB plamsa cutter on ebay for about only 2/3 of what a new one cost, in very good condition. I imagine you could buy a name brand gas mig for a reasonable amount. I have an ESAB 210 volt mig welder and it really is a nice machine. So are the MIller and Hobart models.
