On M35s it comes off the top of the spool. I would do it that way. I suppose the other factor would be which PTO position you want to be "in" versus "out". I think the M35s have a fancy PTO with two speeds for going in (pulling the truck) and one for spooling out, so in that case having the cable come off the bottom would defeat the purpose of the 2-speed PTO, plus it would hit the bumper. On M35s, the notch in the bumper of a non-winch truck faces down. When you put a winch on, you turn the bumper around so the notch is up and provides clearance for the cable.

Yes the cable is stiff. I can't see as how it would hurt to use 3/8" on an M37 being as how it's less than half the weight of an M35. You could still hang the truck from a (strong) tree with it, and you'd have lots of cable and it it would be easier to work with.
