Maybe he was trying to strike a rakish pose. Not sure what kind of gun it is. A .410/30-30 over/under combo or something of that sort? Something with a tubular magazine? Just looking at them, my bet would be on the man in the middle as the one who gets the job done.

What's weird is that they appear to have carried an entire cougar, maybe not even gutted, back to the farm, unless they shot it right there in the garden and trussed it up just to take the picture. Presumably they needed some piece of it to get the bounty from the Stockmen's & Cattlemen's association, but not the whole animal. In his later years, my grandfather saved a couple of hides and had them tanned, and kept a couple of claws for souvenirs, but mostly nobody wanted any part of a cougar, and nobody would think of having one stuffed and mounted.
