I just put a 12 volt regulator on it and it worked. I'm not sure which regulator I used -- most likely a 3-coil GM one. Not sure if the new solid-state ones will do it or not. 15 years ago, you could still get electromechanical ones pretty reasonable from any auto parts store. All it takes to put out twice the voltage is twice the field current. Regulators limit current as well as output voltage in order to keep the generato from burning itself up pumping current into a dead short. It may well be that it won't pump as many amps into a dead battery as a proper 12 volt generator would, but my ammeter reads to 30 amps full scale and the generator will always peg it when the battery is low. I figure theory is good as far as it goes, but theory is no substitute for trying it out. If you have a 6 volt generator and you want to use it on a 12 volt system, just try it and see if it works. Worst case -- the regulator and/or generator will run a bit hotter than normal.
