I bought Matt a 1959 W100 (payment for a haul he did for me) in North Platte NE back in 2001 and it had a 8 foot 60s box on it. It fit well enough, but as it was not a very nice bed we left it behind.
I wonder if someone just managed to find a bed of the same color? Did you check the frame? Could it have been a Sweptline 8 foot bed truck that someone swapped the bed on?
As far as I know there were no 8 foot Utiline beds with the big fenders in 1960, the first year for those was 1961.
Weirder things have been found, but it does seem unlikely to me that it was done from the factory.
As for the axle, the 1961-71 axles might fit, I have never tried. Don't tell me you don't know of another hulk with an axle that you can drag home?
