I have never seen any of the chain rattling types or deceased rising from the dead , but I do believe in ghosts .On this old farm there are many , more than I can count. One such ghost I encountered was a costly one to me . Some soul over fifty plus years ago hung a stable cleaner link on a iron wood tree . Well, in the time since the link was placed on a limb ,the tree grew steadily around it ,until I cut that tree down .When bucking up it with my saw I hit the one pound link and it threw my saw eight feet . The saw didn’t break a chain or slip on the clutch it just stopped the saw cold and bent the crank !Another little ghost who is present here is that of a child , my daughter who meticulously cleans the barn found a hand print in the cement , a tiny hand , that barn floor was poured in nineteen hundred and three . We often wonder whose hand print that was and what became of that child who made that mark over a hundred and six years ago . When I renovated this hundred and seventy year old farm house in two thousand and one ,knocking down the old plaster walls I found a lathing hammer .You know the kind a hammer head on one end for driving nails in the lathes and opposite end a hatchet for cutting the lathes to length . I could only imagine the frustration that lather would have gone too, looking for that ill placed hammer ,the problem would be a day long horse and wagon ride to and from town to get a replacement . When I dry walled that room I placed the hammer back where I found it , who knows may be the ghost who left it there might come here some day and find it . My power wagon sixty years old is living proof we all leave our foot print on this earth . The accumulations of dings and dents ,numerous welds and patches plus countless coats of paint . If you ask me I firmly believe in ghosts , one time sawing in the woods by myself I over did it ,to hot and to tired I dragged my sorry tail to the truck . I said to myself “how many better men than me had sought refuge in this old truck” . Whether to get a cool drink of water in the hot days of summer or warm up in the cab in the dead of a cold winter many men before me have done the same in this truck . All “good “ ghosts from the past ~ Copey
