Definitely check the valves! I bought a truck with the head gasket recently replaced and the head plained but, the valves were either not adjusted (or significantly maladjusted). When the engine turned over it sounded like there were some low cylinders. It started well cold but, it was hard starting when hot. A compression test revealed that four of the cylinders were 115 to 130, and two were around 85. After checking the valves (hot) almost all of them were tight (very tight). When properly adjusted my compression came up to 105 and 110 in the low cylinders and I gained compression in the other cylinders as well. Now the truck barely turns over and starts right up!
