At least thats how I always figured how it works. So, the zinc shouldn't work, unless you reverse the polarity. But then I think you would get the rust plating back on. ;) Well. not rust, but whatever is in solution, like metals from the paint pigment?
But I'm just guessing, personally I use a phophoric acid solution, with zinc added. It does leave the anti rust coating.
