Since you aren't going to spend much I presume you'll stay with 5.83s and forgo an overdrive. So you'll have a 1000 lb lump up front that turns maybe 3200 rpm and sucks gas like no tomorrow. Maybe gas mileage will DECREASE from 9 to 6 mpg!!
If OTOH you do it right and switch to 4.89s and a Ranger overdrive and front disks (and power steering), why not spend $3000 and get a 105 hp/300 ft-lb BT3.9 Cummins from www.enginecom.com or ~$4500 and get a new Perkins 1004T Phaser from Adelman's? the gearing, disk brakes and PS are necessary to do the conversion correctly in either case, diesel vs. 305 V6. The difference will be fuel economy in the 18-22 mpg range(55-70 mph) for the diesel and 9-12 mpg for the old gas motor. Torque, in the 250-300 ft-lb range at 1200-2000 rpm will be good in either case.
Doing an engine swap properly involves a lot more than just acquiring an engine. You'd be best advised to leave your truck alone or simply fix up your existing powerplant as best it can be fixed up if you don't intned to do a complete job on a re-power, which usually requires spending some bucks unless you are extremely good at scrounging.
