Here is the situation, I have an 86 Ford Bronco (fullsize) with a mildly built Big Block (camed up, headers, aluminum intake, ect), and a C6 auto transmission. I want a NP435 four speed manual transmission, which is no problem. Here is the problem. I am about to add a set of Rockwell 2 1/2 ton military axles. These axles are a double reducton unit, and have a ratio of 6.72:1. Even with 42 inch tires, my RPM @65 will be nearly 3500 RPM. Heres my crazy idea. First I need to find a stout truck style three speed transmission. Then coustom fab a coupler that will conect the two transmissions and there input shafts (so that the two transmissions will be facing each other). Then install the transmissions so that the four speed will be facing the correct direction, but between it and the engine will be the three speed backwards. I will need to have the output shaft of the three speed machined to accept a cluch/pilot bushing, and an adapter plate machined to fit the tailhousing bolts to a bellhousing. The direction of rotation in the three speed will be backwards, but gear faces will still engage the same gears, just the gears that used to "push" will now be "pushed", so that souldn't be an issue. By leaving the three speed in 3rd (direct), I would use the four speed for all my shifting needs, and when I need to cruise at highway speeds, I would downshift the three speed to 2nd, and it would act as an overdrive. With a three speed with a 1:2.5 first gear, 1:1.5 second gear, and a 1:1 third, third would provide a direct drive, second would give a 1:.67 over drive with 2350 RPM @65 MPH, or for extended cruising, first gear would give a .4:1 overdrive for a very comfortable 1400 RPM @ 65. (and with 500+ ftlbs of torque down low, I think the truck could deal with a .4:1 Overdrive). I know that serious off roaders have put second transmissions behind there primary transmission for more gear reduction, bu I haven't known of anyone put a transmission in "backwards" for an overdrive. Any ideas? am I crazy? Is this fesable?

Thanks everyone.

P.S. sorry for the non Power Wagon post
