Ok first oil pressure is a key to whether its a possible rod A very low oil presure at a idle 0 psi to 3 psi is a good indication of worn bearings > the correct way is to check is pull off the pan stop and there > then get a air pig fill with oil half way > pressurize air pig 30 psi > hold air pig so OUTLET is at the bottom of the pig install hose from pig into the oil sending unit hole > now have some one open the valve on your air pig with oil in it while you look up near the engine and you will instantly see 1) the bad rod 2) how tight the main bearings are 3) cam bearings for fit > NOW with that said THERE other possiblities of knocking in the engine OK OK IF and say IF you over speed a engine like a power wagons with it low gearing it easliy done esp going down a stiff grade YOU WILL stretch a wrist pin either in the piston (the hole gets big) or the rod end it self on the pin > a wrist pin knock is a double knock under load > A rod bearing knock is generally at the engine floating freely > like as in engine reving up and down under NO load say 1200 to 1800 you shall here mr rod hammering against the crank > a wrist pin is generaly steady even at a idle > other knocks i have seen LOOSE FLY WHEELS and or CLUTCH assemblys and some times the front damper will have worn and knock a little another little knocking i have seen from vale train damaged push rod hammering away on mr lifter and i have seen engines changed out when the fuel pump spring starts to knock away > My opinion i would forgo all testing pull the motor and freshen her up start with a good engine and no more guessing and dont look back ~ Copey
