Who said anything about cleaning anodes? I never clean my SS anodes, and you never clean your graphite anodes. They both work fine. I'm sure platinum anodes would be dandy too.

One last thing and then I'll drop it because it's like arguing about religion with a true believer. I've been running the same SS anodes for years and they are still just like they were when they started -- no corrosion, no pitting, no holes, no dulling of the finish, and no cleaning either. In other words, they're not dissolving in the solution at all. I recently talked with an industrial chemist friend who used to design chlorate cells (talk about corrosive electrochemistry!) and he confirmed that in an alkaline solution, chromium/SS as the anode will not dissolve. Chrome that doesn't dissolve can't hurt anyone. Nobody's afraid of eating with SS utensils or drinking out of a SS bottle or cup.

You use your graphite setup, and I'll use my SS setup, and nobody will get poisoned either way. Whether that's good or bad in regards to the Californians I'll leave for somebody else to argue. An old kitchen sink or junk restaurant equipment is easier for most guys to scrounge up than industrial surplus graphite, but when it comes to Jerry-rigging, ya dance with who brung ya, or you make your contraption out of whatever you have handy. The nice thing about the electrolytic rust removal process is that there are lots of different ways to set it up that all work pretty well.
