Rough in the body work...etch...or use a self etching primer, then 3 good coats of epoxy.
Next board the car/truck with a long board & 100 grit using long strokes & changing directions often from lengthwise to diagonal. You'll likely find more areas needing attention after boarding. If you hit bare metal...stop..you have more body work to do. Once you've done the whole car/truck...3 more coats of epoxy & then a guide coat, as Chris mentioned. Let dry for at least a week...more if possible.
Now you can wet sand. Never touch the panel with anything coarser than 320 grit & lots of soapy water. Get a small rubber squeegy to wipe the mucky water away & sand until the guide coat disappears. Work your way up to 600 grit & never ever sand without a sanding block.
Follow that procedure & she'll turn out straight & purdy
